Digital Video Products Continue To Thrive During May And June

High Consumer Demand And Lower Prices Remain Driving Forces Behind The Digital Transition

23-Jul-01

According to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), manufacturer-to-dealer sales of DVD players increased by 41 percent for the month of June, with nearly 921,000 units sold. This marks the most successful month for DVD sales, contributing 25 percent to the year-to-date sales for 2001 - a 63 percent increase over the same period in 2000. The proliferation of digital video products was also evident in digital television (DTV) product sales, which increased by 122 percent during the month of May to approximately $150 million in unit sales, according to CEA. The continued growth of DTV sales has helped to offset declines in the analog television market, making the total television dollar sales for May 2001 $537 million, just two percent below the same period in 2000. ""June and the summer months are traditionally the lowest sales points of the year, but with more affordable digital products on the market, such as lower prices for both DVD players and DTV models, consumers are seizing the opportunity to create their own digital entertainment experiences,"" said Gary Shapiro, President and CEO of CEA. ""As more consumers come in contact with digital video products, we can only expect sales to increase continually.""
