The Panamax MAXÆ 5500 ACRegeneratorô (Model #M5500) is Panamaxís latest offering for the audiophile. This combines Panamax surge protection with line conditioning, power stabilization and AC regeneration to give true audiophiles the best of all worlds. At a suggested retail of $999, the M5500 features unparalleled AC processing including true isolation filtering, ìa firewall for noise,î combined with surge protection for phone and coax connections. The M5500 has 11 AC outlets, four coaxial protection circuits and one phone line protection circuit. It incorporates convenience features including a lighted voltmeter, ammeter and a halogen light that can illuminate a rack of gear. The light is mounted on a 15-inch flexible shaft that plugs into an XLR jack on the M5500ís front panel. The M5500 is designed to fit into a standard 19-inch rack and includes rack-mounting hardware.Panamax has been the premier surge protection/line conditioning manufacturer in the consumer electronics industry for over 25 years. Virtually all major innovations in surge protection during the past 25 years have come from Panamax. The company has an engineering staff of six people engaged in R&D and surge protection/line conditioning design full time. Panamax has a power laboratory that is certified by CSA to perform agency testing. The Vice President of Engineering sits on the board at IEEE and UL, and has been responsible for the development of many of the current standards for surge protection. Although isolation, balanced power, and inductive based power storage are nice ideas, they all have their drawbacks. With the M5500, Panamax has combined technologies to solve power problems based on specific power needs or ìlevels.î Audio gear can be separated into three different categories based on the way the components use AC power. The first category level is for the digital source components, the second level is for the processing and display components and the third level is for the high powered amplifiers. Panamax has created unique tri-power filtration with three types of AC filters in the M5500 to address each type of equipment. Level One - Digital Source Components:The M5500 uses a low noise toroidal isolation transformer to feed four AC outlets up to 500 VA of completely isolated power. This design provides digital source components ultra-pure 60 Hz AC power with no electromagnetic or radio frequency interference. The result is a signal output from digital sources that is pure and completely free from the induced effects of EMI/RFI. The very large isolation transformer also provides the benefit of inductive-based power storage for all the outlets on the M5500. Level Two - Signal Processing And Display Devices:The M5500 features two, independent, ìBalanced Double-Lî filtration circuits feeding two outlets per filter. These circuits are designed for preamplifiers, surround processors, VCRs, TVs, projectors, etc. that can require large amounts of current and are particularly susceptible to the negative effects of electrical noise. The Balanced Double-L filter features both normal and common mode inductors that when combined with capacitance create a resonance that will eliminate 99.7 percent of EMI/RFI electrical noise and will be able to deliver up to 15 amps of current to the outlets. These outlets can also tap into the stored energy of the toroidal transformer without the in-line impedance that large inductors create. The result is clean, low impedance power for sensitive display and processing components.Level Three - High Powered Amplifiers:The M5500 features a high current circuit for amplifiers and powered subwoofers. The high current circuit uses capacitance based line conditioning to filter out unwanted noise without limiting in-rush current. The M5500 high current circuit has NO in-line inductance - as a matter of fact, it features an energy-storing transformer in parallel with the high current circuit that will augment the power available to the amplifiers during high current events. These outlets can be triggered by a 12-volt source and can be set up with variable delays. The result is controllable outlets that can feed power hungry amplifiers MORE power than is available at the wall during burst of high current draw.Panamax SurgeGate Plusô technology is actually smart power protection. It constantly monitors AC line voltage for unsafe conditions such as prolonged over-voltages or under-voltages (brownouts). If the M5500 senses an unsafe power condition, it will automatically disconnect your equipment from the power to protect it from damage. Once the voltage returns to a safe level, the M5500 will automatically reconnect the power. Panamax has backed SurgeGate Plusô with our Protect Or Disconnectô circuitry that will sacrifice itself before it will allow connected equipment to be damaged. The M5500ís coax protection consists of four independent circuits, two for satellite and two for CATV or off air. All Panamax coax circuits are independently sealed and shielded to prevent signal loss or the introduction of noise. Panamax is the only company that provides real protection on the coax circuits by combining solid-state protection with our patented circuitry that reduces insertion loss to less than 1 dB. All Panamax coax circuits are fused - they will protect the equipment or disconnect before the equipment can be damaged.Panamaxís satellite protection circuit will pass the 950 MHz to 2.2 GHz bandwidth with less than 1 dB of loss while limiting the voltage to 27 volts or less. Panamaxís CATV and off-air protection circuits will pass the 50-950 MHz bandwidth with less than 1 dB of loss, and limit the voltage to less than 0.7 volts.
