MartinLogan Introduces the Descent -- BalancedForce, Advanced Servo-Controlled, High Resolution Subwoofer

27-Sep-01

MartinLogan, the leader in development and production of the world's most accurate loudspeaker transducer -- the patented curvilinear line source electrostatic panel -- announces the introduction of the Descentô, a reference, powered subwoofer system. The Descent delivers dramatic bass detail and attack using advanced servo monitoring and control, BalancedForceô bass configuration, low-mass aluminum element drivers, a low distortion amp and highly-evolved enclosure technology. ""MartinLogan set out to engineer the Descent subwoofer by developing standards beyond traditional subwoofer design. Designing to the higher standards of superior electrostatic transducers became the MartinLogan challenge. New low levels of distortion and accurate system integration result in the highest levels of performance available today,"" said Gayle Sanders, President and founder of MartinLogan. ""The Descent sets new standards in system performance."" The Descent's advanced servo monitoring and control system, combined with state-of-the-art driver and cabinet technologies reduce intermodulated and harmonic distortions to a new level of precision. Servo control operates via a control circuit that constantly monitors and corrects for any deviation within each driver. The result? Literally a three- to ten-fold reduction in distortion at high levels, leaving clean, well-defined bass. By operating three 10-inch drivers in parallel, the Descent benefits from aggregate low distortion and optimal control, achieving the effective cubic displacement of an 18-inch driver while maintaining the control and low distortion resolution of a next-generation 10-inch driver. BalancedForceô bass configuration resolves cabinet vibrations found in other subwoofer topologies, resulting in the generation of the ideal -- only pure bass energy. Originally engineered for the cost-no-object, state-of-the-art Statementô E2 system, BalancedForce uses two or more drivers mounted facing away from each other. The Descent's three drivers, spaced 120 degrees apart, operate in exact opposition, resulting in maximum vibration cancellation. The Descent uses a recently-developed class of switching amplifier rated at a true 400 watts RMS (800 watts peak) with a total harmonic distortion of 0.07% at all levels. The MartinLogan team designed the Descent with an input architecture that easily integrates in both two-channel and multichannel systems. The LFE input effectively uses no low-pass filter, instead leaving crossover control to the processor. The left/right line-level inputs integrate an audiophile-grade 40 or 70 Hz low-pass filter. The RCA output allows multiple Descents to operate in a serial configuration. Handcrafted and designed by MartinLogan's engineering and industrial design team, the Descent features a quick-change wood finish top and MartinLogan ETCô spikes for maximum bass performance. The suggested retail price for the Descent is $2,495. For more information about MartinLogan, visit www.martinlogan.com.
