Standesign Retractable Component Stacks Help Custom Installers Get Behind Their Systems

4-Oct-01

One of the biggest problems facing custom audio/video system installers is gaining access to the rear panels of components mounted in cabinets and equipment closets in order to connect or change any of the wires. Now, Standesign has introduced a retractable equipment rack, innovative cable mangement system and removable gantry that can be used to move an entire stack of components 50 inches out in front of a cabinet and provide full access to the rear panels. The Standesign BCM System is compatible with almost any audio/video cabinet or equipment closet. The BCM System, which is part of Standesign's Modular series, consists of three elements. The BCM is the rolling Base and Cable Management device that includes a short segment of track fastened to the shelf of the A/V cabinet. The Gantry is a removable track and height-adjustable support used to slide the rack into the room. The Modules are stackable individual shelf sections, available in 8-, 10-, and 12-inch heights, that can be combined to form a multi-shelf system rack. ""This is a terrific tool for the custom installer,"" said Paul Madsen, President, Group Madsen, the United States Distributor for Standesign. ""It will dramatically reduce the amount of time, effort and complexity of installing and connecting a system inside a cabinet or closet. No more wrestling with equipment or reaching around to make blind connections. With the Standesign BCM, one person can install, update or service the system without damaging the equipment, surroundings or the installer! We believe it is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to manage this type of installation."" The BCM rolling base has a rugged steel and wood platform that can only move along the track sections, and not lift up or derail in any way. To extend the equipment out of the cabinet, the installer connects the gantry's tracks to the ends of the BCM's tracks, making sure the gantry legs are set to the same height. He then simply slides the stack out onto the gantry. The BCM's folding cable management system eliminates the risk that this action will break any of the connections. This system uses two hinged panels that, when extended, are like an open book cover with the binding facing up. All wires run across the 'binding,' to connect to the components, and are wire-tied to these panels with the system fully extended. When the system retracts, these panels fold, taking up all the slack without pulling on any of the wires. This system does an excellent job of organizing large groups of speaker wires, Cat. 5, video cables, etc. Once the A/V system is assembled and hooked up, the BCM is rolled back into the cabinet, locked in place, and then the Gantry tracks are removed. The gantry can be folded up for easy storage or transport to another work site. The suggested retail price of the BCM is $599, the Gantry is $249, and the Modules are $99 each. Standesign is a British manufacturer that is highly regarded for its attractive and innovative audio/video component stands.
