Telarc International, an industry leader in digital recording for more than two decades, announces the release of the 2000 recording, ìRoute 66: That Nelson Riddle Sound,î on Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD). The new SACD format, created by Sony and Philips, provides unprecedented sound quality in stereo and discrete multichannel surround. To achieve its sonic performance, SACD employs a radically new digital encoding technology called Direct Stream Digital (DSD). DSD samples the musical signal at a phenomenal 2.8 million times a second - 64 times greater than traditional CD recordings. The result is an extremely smooth digital waveform with unparalleled frequency response and dynamic range. Telarc is now recording all of its projects using the DSD process. The potential benefits of SACD do not stop with its performance. The SACD format supports several disc configurations, including a Hybrid SACD designed to be completely compatible with the millions of CD players in the market today. Hybrid SACDs actually contain two complete layers of music information. One is the conventional CD layer, which can play on any standard CD player. The other, high-density layer contains both the original DSD two-channel recording as well as a DSD six-channel recording that can be played in the new generation of stereo and surround SACD players. Each of the six channels can be recorded separately with full 100 kHz frequency response and 120dB dynamic range across the audio band. Both the six-channel and the two-channel sound images have unparalleled resolution and transparency. On ìRoute 66: That Nelson Riddle Sound,î Riddleís music so suits the Cincinnati Pops Big Band Orchestra that it almost seems as if heíd been writing for them all along. Guided by conductor Erich Kunzel, they interpret these familiar pieces as instrumental works with great panache and detail, creating handsome settings for special guest soloists. Due January 25th, this new Telarc recording is also a tribute to Riddleís work with Frank Sinatra, and features many of the tunes that helped make them one of the most celebrated collaborations in music history. This release highlights all the important phases of Nelson Riddleís career, including ìRoute 66, ì ìNight and Day,î ìZing Went the Strings (of My Heart),î ìLet Yourself Go!,î ìLetís Face the Music and Dance,î ìYou and the Night and the Music,î ìGet Happy,î and other signature pieces. ìRoute 66: That Nelson Riddle Soundî also features classic songs associated with Frank Sinatra, particularly ìWhatís New,î ìThe Lady is a Tramp,î ìNice ëN Easy,î ìI Get Along Without You Very Well,î and ìSeptember in the Rain.î Using all new orchestrations, creative guest improvisers like Randy Sandke, Ken Peplowski, Jim Pugh, and David Edwards replace the vocals with brass and reed solos. ìRoute 66: That Nelson Riddle Soundî also showcases the terrific work of Mike Berkowitz, who drummed extensively for Riddle. With liner notes written by Will Friedwald, author of Jazz Singing and Sinatra! The Song Is You, this new release is the follow-up to Kunzel and the Popsí Big Band Hit Parade (CD-80177), which enjoyed 47 weeks on the Billboard Classical Crossover chart, eventually hitting #3. Telarc currently has 12 titles in various genres - classical, jazz, contemporary jazz, and blues - available in multichannel (Hybrid) SACD. Approximately 36 titles will be available in the six-channel SACD format by June 2002. Visit the Telarc website, www.telarc.com, for the most updated information on our new SACD recordings.
