6-Mar-02

Samsung Electronics America, Inc. expands its line of progressive-scan DVD players with the addition of four new models, including a high-end DVD player, a DVD-Audio player, and a DVD/VCR combo that are the first to offer compatibility with the Memory Stick system. All four models improve upon the benefits of progressive scan output with 3:2 pull-down. The new models include the DVD-P421, DVD-P721M, DVD-A921M DVD-Audio player, and the DVD-V2500 DVD/VCR combo. Claude Frank, Samsung Electronic America's Senior Marketing Manager for Digital Audio/Video, said, ""Progressive-scan has quickly become a critical DVD feature and Samsung now offers the most comprehensive progressive-scan lineup on the market with a solution to meet every need. Add to that innovative new features such as 3:2 pull-down and Memory Stick compatibility for unbeatable performance and functionality, and you have a perfect example of the power of Samsung DVD in 2002."" The DVD-A921M was specifically designed to handle the new DVD-Audio format discs. This flexible format uses the massive storage of DVD discs for ultra-high fidelity two-channel recordings or multi-channel, better-than-CD-quality recordings. Audiophiles should also appreciate the DVD-A921M's HDCDÆ decoding capability, which decodes 20-bit data from HDCD-encoded CDs. The DVD-P721, DVD-A921 DVD-Audio player, and DVD-V2500 DVD/VCR combo are the first DVD players on the market to offer a Memory Stick slot. This interface, compatible with Memory Stick media, can be used for still-image display for viewing of photos from a digital camera, digital camcorder or PC file, right on the on the TV. Pictures can also be loaded from Photo CD-compatible discs. The Memory Stick can also play back MP3 files. Additionally, all three DVD models handle DVDs, CDs, DVD-Rs, Video CDs and CD-Rs encoded with MP3 music files. All four models feature 17-inch-wide front panels. The DVD-P421, DVD-P721, and DVD-A921 offer full-size headphone jacks, rotary volume controls, and convenient jog shuttle controls on the front panel. All models include a full complement of rear panel connections, including composite and S-video outputs, and component video terminals that can be set for either interlaced or progressive-scan. Audio terminals include optical and coaxial DTSÆ-compatible digital audio outputs, and analog stereo audio outputs that can be set to produce a virtual surround sound effect from just two speakers via the Phantom Surround Processor. Every model includes a universal remote that can control a host of TVs, VCRs and other equipment. The remotes for the DVD-P721M and DVD-A921M sport a jog shuttle dial, while the DVD-P421 and DVD-V2500 remotes feature a joystick system that allows single-finger control over the navigation features. These functions include screen fit, chapter digest and full-motion zoom, which allows extreme magnification of selected elements without distortion, even as the movie is playing. The DVD-P421 will be shipped in April at an MSRP of $199.99. The DVD-721M will be available in May, at an MSRP of $249.99, with the DVD-921M shipping the following month, retailing at $299.99. The DVD-V2500 combo is due out in March, at a $349.99 MSRP. For more information about Samsung Electronics USA, visit www.samsungusa.com.
