Samsung Announces Full LCD Panel TV Line, Including 40-Inch LCD TV

8-Mar-02

Samsung announced the introduction of a family of four-in-one LCD TVs. Samsung's multimedia LCD TVs are full-featured, high resolution TVs; HDTV monitors (1080i, 720p, 480p); PC-compatible displays; and video monitors that allows direct hookup of a DVD player, VCR, camcorder or a video gaming device. A PC/picture-in-picture (PC/PIP) function lets users watch a video source while working on the PC. Samsung's LCD TV line features sizes ranging from a 40-inch model, the world's largest, to 15 inches in both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios. Samsung's LCD TVs earned a 2002 CES Innovations Award for Design and Engineering with the 24-inch model. Two 4:3 models, the 15-inch LTM1555 and 17-inch LTM1755, will be available in the first quarter of 2002. John Lavoie, Marketing Manager, Visual Display Group, Samsung Electronics USA, Inc., said, ""As the world leader in TFT LCD monitors, Samsung was the first company to introduce a full convergence flat panel TV display last year. We've now enhanced that award-winning technology to storm the home theatre and home entertainment markets. Today's savvy consumers demand more product in the box and Samsung's versatile LCD TVs push the envelope to the extreme by doing the job of four separate displays in one. You can plug just about any device into these panels."" Samsung's LCD TV line includes the 15-inch LTM1555 and 17-inch LTM1755. They are claimed to be the slimmest designs on the market (just 2 inches and 2.24 inches deep, respectively), and consuming roughly 50 percent of the wattage of tube TVs. They also feature a tilt stand design and wall mounting capability. The enhanced Samsung screens boast the highest brightness in the category (450cd/m2 for LTM1555 and 350cd/m2 for the LMT1755), and a contrast ratio for both of 400:1. Engineered first as a TV (with PC functionality), Samsung LCD TVs are said to smoothly handle all the fast motion action of sports and movie programming, and are designed to prevent blurring and image trailing. As an HDTV monitor, these models convert all signals to progressive-scan. The LTM1555 and LTM1755 feature Virtual DolbyÆ Surround. Special picture and still picture modes, component video input, and a metallic-silver finish are the other features. Samsung's PC/PIP allows users full control over PIP viewing. Users can choose from three different size preferences for the secondary pop-up window, move the PIP window to any position on the screen, and use the 64x zoom to pinpoint a section of the screen image. Samsung's LCD TV lineup expands with five models (15-40 inches) in the 16:9 widescreen format, the aspect ratio preferred by most home theater enthusiasts, in early 2002. These models include the 24-inch display that won the CES Innovations Award for Design and Engineering. Samsung will debut the world's first 40-inch LCD, the LTM405W in the second half of the year. An optional AV wireless solution sends a video signal to a receiver located near one of the LCD TVs, allowing a VCR, DVD player, or other video source to be transmitted wirelessly to the LCD TV. With 150- and 120-degree viewing angles, respectively, the LTM1555 features XGA resolution (1024 x 768) for computer applications, while the LTM1755 features SXGA resolution (1280 x 1024). Both models are shipping as of February 2002, with the LTM1555 available for $1,399.99 MSRP and the LTM1755 available for $1,999.99.
