Sales Of Video Products On The Rise During May

28-Jun-02

According to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), manufacturer-to-dealer sales of video products reached nearly 4.1 million units in May, an almost seven percent increase compared to the same period in 2001. Sales of DVD players also continued to rise during May to 941,673 units, an 80 percent increase compared to the same period in 2001. With year-to-date figures up nearly 35 percent, sales of DVD players have consistently shown impressive gains. Factory-to-dealer sales of camcorders increased to 507,372 units during May -- a gain of approximately 12 percent. More than 2.1 million units have been sold in 2002, a more than five percent increase for the year. In addition, digital television (DTV) products, which include standalone monitors and integrated sets, fared well in April. With more than $216 million, manufacturer-to-dealer sales of DTV products increased 120 percent compared to the same period during 2001. ""Continuing months of phenomenal growth, the digital duo of DTV and DVD have proven that the digital transition is here to stay, offering consumers a compelling upgrade path from the analog world,"" said CEA Senior Industry Analyst Sean Wargo. ""We expect these products to be the cornerstone of industry growth for the year, even as traditional analog products are phased out of the market."" Data cited in this release is available for purchase through CEA's Market Activity Reports and Analysis (MARA) program.
