Toshiba Launches Portable DVD-Video/Audio Player With Progressive Scan And High-Resolution Widescreen 8.9-Inch Screen

The Toshiba SD-P2000 is claimed to be the industry's only progressive scan portable DVD-Video/Audio player with a high-resolution widescreen 8.9-inch LCD display. The SD-P2000 features an 8.9-inch polysilicon, thin film transistor, active matrix display that provides an 1.84-megapixel (1024x600) resolution image. There is also two-channel DVD-Audio capability. Additionally, the SD-P2000 includes a full complement of audio and video connections. ""The essence of expanding the DVD experience is to provide consumers with the means to enjoy the highest quality DVD entertainment wherever and whenever they want,"" noted Craig Eggers, Director of Product Management for Toshiba DVD. ""The SD-P2000 delivers all of the benefits of an ultra-sophisticated full-sized model, including progressive scan, widescreen viewing, and high-performance DVD-Audio playback. In addition to its advanced audio and video enhancements, we've also extended battery life, permitting viewers the freedom to enjoy virtually any full-length movie without monitoring the clock."" Toshiba's portable SD-P2000 DVD player includes a 3.5-hour lithium ion rechargeable battery. It features two headphone jacks, invertible LCD display, optional DC car adapter, and an optional battery accessory which extends playback by an additional 5.5 hours. The SD-P2000 is equipped with a Super ColorStream PROÆ progressive scan component video output, as well as a built-in 10-bit/54 MHz video DAC and 24-bit/192 kHz audio DACs from Analog Devices for two-channel DVD-Audio. The SD-P2000 offers multi-disc playback capability, including DVD-Video, DVD-R, CD, Video CD, CD-R and CD-RW, as well as MP3-compatible playback of CD-R/CD-RW discs containing MP3 files. The SD-P2000 is equipped with surface-mounted keypads, and a sleek credit card-sized remote control is supplied. A Dialogue Expander, accessible from the player's menu, enhances center channel frequencies, and built-in SpatializerÆ N-2-2 Virtual Surround Sound technology provides surround sound from two-channels. Connections include audio and video mini-plug outputs, standard S-video connectors, plus a digital audio output. In addition, a monitor input lets users connect other portable video products such as a camcorder, and view the imported images on the LCD screen. The SD-P2000 features DolbyÆ Digital and DTSÆ digital audio output for connection to a compatible receiver. Additionally, a Picture Zoom function enables viewers to expand select areas of the picture. The SD-P2000 features a Chapter Preview feature, as well as a the Strobe Viewer that lets users display high-speed action images in successive order by selecting the number of picture ""samples"" desired and varying the time between each successive image. With the Angle Viewer feature, users can also view thumbnail images of available camera angles on-screen. The player's Capture feature allows users to create their own background ""wallpaper"" which may be displayed during startup or standby modes. Finally, users can create three custom picture settings. A supplied Lithium Ion battery delivers 3.5 hours of playback. During CD and DVD-Audio playback, the SD-P2000's LCD display panel can be turned off. The SD-P2000 DVD player is also supplied with a D-2 component cable and AC adapter. It measures approximately 1.15 inches high, 6.3 inches deep, and 8.27 inches wide, and weighs 1.75 pounds without the lithium ion battery.
