B&W Introduces CM Series Subwoofer

7-Aug-02

The CM Series from B&W Loudspeakers grows by one with the introduction of the ASW-CM, a compact, 10-inch active subwoofer design. The ASW-CM supercedes B&W's earlier ASW-2500 model. The new subwoofer is barely larger than its predecessor, but employs a new driver and a new amplifier/electronics design. There is also a new cabinet design, which incorporates extensive bracing and improved acoustical design, and is sheathed in the CM family's real wood veneers, offering a choice of rosenut, maple, and black ash finishes. ""With the ASW-CM, we now have a sub that's both acoustically and cosmetically matched to the CM lineup, which has been one of B&W's most successful,"" says Chris Browder, Executive Vice President of B&W Loudspeakers. ""CM customers demand performance, but they also appreciate the elegant exteriors B&W's upscale products are famous for; the CM subwoofer delivers on both counts."" The new sub employs a new 10-inch driver developed specifically for the ASW-CM, made of a unique combination of B&W's Kevlarô/pulp composite and aluminum. The ASW-CM's subwoofer electronics were also a ground-up engineering effort designed to fully take advantage of the new driver's capabilities. Conceived around B&W's proprietary bass overload suppression circuit, the electronics sub-system stretches the useful operating limits of the sub's long-throw 10-inch driver. Another factor is all-new amplifier circuitry co-developed by B&W and Philips. The new amp utilizes Class D operation and switching-mode power supply design to achieve high headroom and 500 watts of power. The ASW-CM features continuously variable crossover frequency and level controls, and two-way crossover filtering, which provides third-order 80 Hz high-pass ""returns"" on stereo line-level outputs. The sub also offers the A/B bass roll-off ""alignment"" switch, which selects among two curves optimized for maximum bass extension or maximum bass output. Link-out jacks for system expansion, and phase-reverse and auto power-on/off features are also present. The ASW-CM supports B&W's CM Series cosmetically as well, with matching brushed-aluminum face and real wood veneers. The ASW-CM Subwoofer is available at a manufacturer's suggested price $1,300.
