B&W Adds New Subwoofer To 600 Series

7-Aug-02

B&W Loudspeakers has introduced a new 600 Series subwoofer, the ASW-675, which supercedes the ASW-2500. Just slightly larger in size than its predecessor, the ASW-675 features improved driver technologies and a new amplifier/electronics package. ""Though just barely bigger than the ASW-2500, the new ASW-675 goes demonstrably lower, louder, and 'quicker' than its predecessor,"" says Chris Browder, Executive Vice President of B&W Loudspeakers. ""Despite the resemblance to the earlier design this is an all-new sub: new driver; new enclosure, and innovative, super-powerful amplifier, which combines with our proprietary smart electronics to extend the performance limits for compact subwoofers yet again."" The new 10-inch transducer, developed specifically for the ASW-675, employs a combination of B&W's proprietary Kevlarô/pulp composite and aluminum. This driver is complemented by new subwoofer electronics, engineered from the start to make the most of its substantial capabilities. B&W's proprietary bass overload suppression system enables the relatively small, long-throw driver to ""push out"" its performance envelope before physical or electro-magnetic overload is reached. The new amplifier circuitry, which evolved from a co-development project with Philips, is a high headroom, 500-watt layout. The design mates Class D operation with a switching-mode power supply. The new B&W sub features continuously variable crossover frequency and level controls, two-way crossover filtering, providing third-order 80 Hz high-pass ""returns"" on its line-level outputs. The ASW-675 also incorporates B&W's A/B bass roll-off ""alignment"" switch, which selects among two curves optimized for maximum bass extension or maximum bass output. Completing the new sub's connection and user facilities are link-out jacks for expansion via additional subs, and phase-reverse and auto power-on/off controls. The ASW-675 complements B&W's 600 Series loudspeakers, carrying over their radiused silver baffles and offering the line's black ash and Sorrento light oak woodgrain exteriors. It is available at a manufacturer's suggested price of $1,000.
