PSB Speakers celebrated their 30th anniversary during CEDIA EXPO 2002. Thirty years ago, violinist/engineer Paul Barton discovered that even the best speakers of the day failed the simple test of his musician's ear; unable to reconcile the live music he performed with recorded playback. Barton set out to create something better: more musically transparent, dynamically honest, and true to the original sound.The task turned out to be a little more challenging than Barton had first imagined. Founded by Paul Barton, the company released its first commercial product, the Avante, a two-way, 8-inch speaker in 1972. PSB has grown a thousand-fold in the ensuing decades, and the results speak for themselves. In 1974, Paul Barton became the first commercial speaker designer to exploit the unique acoustical facilities of Canada's National Research Council (NRC) in Ottawa.
