Snell Acoustics has introduced the AMC 2000, an in-wall speaker based on the XA1900THX (the first THXÆ Ultra 2-certified) in-cabinet monitor at CEDIA EXPO 2002. The AMC 2000 uses high-quality drivers and components inside a wood enclosure. Snell has fully enclosed the AMC 2000 in a wood enclosure with a damped sandwich baffle construction, to control and extend bass response, regardless of wall placement or construction. The AMC 2000 is designed to fit into conventional 2 x 4 walls, and even behind acoustically transparent screens. The speaker uses low-resonance, non-plastic materials.Employing the company's eXpanding Array (XA) technology, the AMC 2000, which is intended for use as LCR (left/center/right) channels in home theatre and multichannel music systems, features the MTM (mid-tweeter-mid) array consisting of dual 2.5-inch midranges and a 1-inch aluminum dome tweeter, mounted on a separate aluminum plate. This MTM array is coupled with two 8-inch high-output woofers, capable of bass response below 60 Hz. The MTM array is set at a fixed 20-degree lateral angle, allowing for a natural tilt-in toward the listener. The mounting baffle for the MTM is removable, making it possible to rotate the entire array 90 degrees. The array can be pointed in any of four directions depending on its relation to the screen. The complex design formula of the eXpanding Array calculates driver size, spacing, crossover frequency, and slope to come up with an array whose length varies with frequency. As the applied frequency decreases, the effective array length expands to give constant directivity. Every AMC2000 is assembled by hand and individually calibrated, yielding performance to within 0.5 dB of the reference master spec at the company's factory in Haverhill, Massachusetts. The AMC 2000 has an MSRP of $4,000 a pair. For more information, visit www.snellacoustics.com.
