Manufacturer-to-dealer sales of digital video products, such as DVD players and digital camcorders, increased during August and September, according to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). In addition, unprecedented sales of digital television (DTV) products during July and August helped to boost total television sales.During August, factory-to-dealer sales of DVD players increased by more than 22 percent to 825,651 units, bringing the year-to-date total for DVD player sales shipped to dealers to more than 8 million units--an increase of nearly 40 percent compared to the same period in 2001. Sales of camcorders remained steady with manufacturer-to-dealer sales totaling 293,136 units during August. Year-to-date sales finished the month of August (week 34) with more than 3.5 million units shipped to dealers, representing an increase of 10 percent compared to 2001.Growth trends continued into September, with factory-to-dealer sales of DVD players up 25 percent to more than 2.2 million units for the month. Year-to-date sales of DVD players during September reached more than 10.2 million units for a total increase of nearly 36 percent over 2001. Year-to-date camcorder sales increased nearly nine percent to approximately 4.1 million units by the end of September. ""Consumers are continually showing their preference for digital over analog products,"" said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of CEA. ""And with more affordable digital products on the market, such as lower prices for both DVD players and DTV models, consumers are seizing the opportunity to create their own digital entertainment experiences."" During July, dollar figures for manufacturer-to-dealer sales of DTV products increased by more than 67 percent to $372.8 million. This growth trend continued in August with factory-to-dealer sales increasing 55 percent to $378.7 million in dollar sales for the month, bringing the year-to-date total dollar figures for manufacturer-to-dealer sales to nearly $2.3 billion--an increase of 72 percent compared to the same period in 2001.Due to the tremendous growth in DTV sales, total television sales in July increased by 21 percent to $745.6 million. Likewise in August, monthly television sales increased nearly 16 percent to $870.9 million.
