B&W Debuts ASW-CDM Compact Subwoofer

B&W Loudspeakers has introduced the ASW-CDM subwoofer, which features a high-output 12-inch driver and 1000-watt dedicated amplifier. The new sub has a compact form factor of 15 x 15 x 20 inches.""We challenged the design team at our Steyning Research Center to produce state-of-the-art slam and bottom-octaves extension from a high-end subwoofer with an even more compact and elegant form than we had previously achieved,"" says B&W Loudspeakers Executive Vice President Chris Browder. ""It required a good deal of fresh thinking and innovative engineering, but in the end they succeeded admirably.The ASW-CDM produces prodigious bass--with tremendous in-room dynamics, and useful output down to 15 Hz--yet it is smaller and less visually imposing than its 12-inch predecessors in this field.îB&W's 12-inch driver incorporating key features including woven-KevlarÆ material for the cone, reinforced for the ASW-CDM application with resin-impregnated fibers. The driver uses a one-piece, ""mushroom-ring"" bonded assembly of the cone, carbon fiber voice coil bobbin, and reinforced dust cap. The ""motor"" system incorporates a T-shaped pole-piece and aluminum focus ring. Additionally, there is a ""triple-decker"" suspension system for the ASW-CDM driver to permit very long excursion while preserving control and voice coil/magnet alignment.The ASW-CDM is equipped with an all-new, 1000-watt dedicated amplifier. The sub's active second-order low-pass filter offers a choice of bass roll-off alignments. The low-pass filter may be defeated for straight-in use, and both subwoofer level and low-pass frequency are continuously adjustable. There is a phase-reverse switch. The ASW-CDM further provides third-order fixed high-pass filtering on its line-level ""return"" outputs, and there's a Link Out output for daisy-chaining additional subs.The ASW-CDM's sealed enclosure is assembled from heavyweight wood composites and is extensively braced. The ASW-CDM's cabinet is available in a selection of hand-finished real wood veneers: Black Ash, Cherrywood, and red-stained Cherrywood.
