Atlantic Technology has introduced its new top-of-the-line 8200 THX Ultra2 speaker system. This system features an array of sonic adjustments, allowing each speaker to be adjusted according to its placement in the listening environment. The System 8200's modular speaker components are delivered in duraBlacô, Atlantic's matte black ""speckled"" lacquer finish, for installation inside cabinets, or behind a screen or curtains. These black enclosures can be fitted with optional high-gloss black lacquer or wood veneer accent panels.System 8200 components include the 8200 LR three-way front speaker, 8200 C three-way center channel, 8200 SR dipole/bipole surround speakers, and either a traditional 8200 box-style powered subwoofer or the 8200 PED Pedestal Woofers. Also known as PedWoofersô, these can be combined with 8200 LRs to be used effectively as tower speakers. A dedicated outboard 350-watt-per-channel servo-controlled amplifier with dual parametric equalizers is included.""The Atlantic Technology System 8200 demonstrates that it is possible to approach the outer limits of the state-of-the-art in multichannel sound without having to pay the price equivalent of a new luxury car,"" said the company's President, Peter Tribeman. ""We have seen some very high-end custom home theatres with $100,000 speaker systems that, practically speaking, would be hard-pressed to substantially exceed the performance of our new system at one-tenth the cost. We have devoted a great deal of effort and cost to build in sophisticated controls that let the installer or consumer fine-tune the speakers to the room and the source material. It's certainly not an overstatement to say that this system will outperform most competing speaker systems simply because it works with the room and source material as opposed to against them!""The System 8200 is the first implementation of the company's CORE (Custom Optimized Room Enhanced) design philosophy. The System 8200 gives the consumer or custom installer the option of concealing the duraBlac speakers in cabinets or behind screens, or dressing them up to display them in plain sight, and only paying for the level of finish required by the installation. The optional accent panel kits (available only for the 8200 LR/C, PedWoofer, and empty pedestal for the LR) are available in high-gloss black lacquer, Natural Maple, Oiled Cherry, Natural Mahogany, and unfinished MDF. The kits include tempered smoked glass tops for the LR, while the PedWoofer kit offers the glass tops as an option. Should the consumer choose not to use PedWoofers, empty pedestals are available to take the place of the PedWoofers in building up the floor-standing LRs.The System 8200 makes use of an array of sonic adjustments to optimize the system to the room, the source material, and the listener's acoustic taste. The SA 8200 servo-controlled, 350-watt-per-channel PedWoofer amplifier includes parametric EQ, a four-position phase adjustment, along with remote-controlled preset source EQs and level trim. A test disc developed in conjunction with Sencore is included with each system. The 8200 PED features a side-mounted 12-inch driver with a cone made from a proprietary mixture of Homopolymer, ceramic elements, carbon fiber, and glass beads. The internally braced cabinet has 1-inch-thick sides and 3/4-inch front and back sections. There is a front mounted IR receiver to receive and send control signals back to the dedicated SA 8200 external subwoofer amplifier. Each 8200 PED SUB system includes two PedWoofer units and a single 2 x 350-watt SA 8200. Two of these systems are required for THX Ultra2 certified installations. The 8200 BOX SUB features a 15-inch woofer and built-in power amplifier. More information will be available shortly. The three-way 8200 LR and 8200 C speakers feature a trio of acoustic controls to compensate for different room environments, including the tweeter's output slope according to the acoustical condition of the room, mid- and high-frequency output for placement of speakers behind perforated screens or curtains, and lower-midrange for boundary compensation. They feature a 1-inch silk dome heat-sinked and Ferrofluidô-cooled tweeter, flanked vertically by a pair of 5-1/4-inch midrange drivers. Twin 8-inch woofers handle the bass frequencies, down to 80 Hz. The LRs are vertically oriented, with tapered rear panels to reduce internal standing waves. The LR uses a D'Appolito array where the top half of the front baffle is a mirror image of the bottom half. The 8200 C uses a horizontal cabinet with the D'Appolito array mounted vertically in the center of the front baffle, with an 8-inch woofer on either side. The 8200 C also features a tilting base to compensate for placement above or below the video screen. The 8200 SR surrounds are dipole/bipole-switchable and meet the THX Ultra2 specifications. The speakers are available in either duraBlac or matte white finish, and can be wall-mounted or used in conjunction with optional surround pedestals. They use two of the same silk dome tweeters as the front speakers, and two 6.5-inch woofers mounted in a low-profile cabinet that has a flat back and keyhole slots. The Atlantic Technology System 8200 will be available in January 2003, at system prices ranging from $6,000 to $18,000, depending on configuration and finishing options.
