Manufacturer-to-dealer sales of digital video products, such as DVD players posted modest gains during the month of October, according to figures released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). DVD player sales totaled more than 1.5 million units for the month--an increase of nearly two percent, compared to the same period in 2001. Year-to-date sales totals for digital video products are still strong, despite slight declines for the month.Year-to-date sales of DVD players increased by 30 percent, to total nearly 11.8 million units by the end of October. Thanks to significant increases in factory-to-dealer sales of digital television (DTV) products, total television sales also are maintaining growth. During September, DTV product sales increased by 64 percent, boosting total television sales for the month to more than $1.1 billion--a more than seven percent increase compared to 2001. Year-to-date sales of all televisions increased more than 15 percent by the end of September to $7.4 billion.""With prices of DVD and DTV products falling at rapid rates, consumers are able to take advantage of the market and purchase these products at extremely attractive prices,"" said Sean Wargo, Director of Industry Analysis for CEA. ""This is pushing adoption rates to historically high levels and will continue to do so throughout the holidays.""Data cited in this release is available through CEA's Market Activity Reports and Analysis (MARA) program.
