THIEL Audio recently shipped its SW1 subwoofer featuring SmartSubô technology and has introduced a new high-performance in-ceiling loudspeaker, the HigherPlane. The HigherPlane is the in-ceiling version of THIEL's in-wall PowerPlane and the PowerPointô surface-mount loudspeakers. The HigherPlane uses the same time- and phase-correct coaxial driver and crossover design as both the PowerPlane and PowerPoint. The HigherPlan features a self-enclosed, rigidly braced cabinet, along with a two-way driver system that employs short-coil, long-gap motor systems, and rigid aluminum diaphragms. The HigherPlane features an 11-inch diameter aluminum baffle and grille that are paintable. A special preconstruction mounting bracket is available to simplify installation into new home construction. The suggested retail price of the HigherPlane is $1,200 each. The THIEL SW1 features patent-pending SmartSubô technology, claimed to enable the SW1 system to overcome the problems exhibited by conventional subwoofers--poor integration with the system's main speakers and altered response due to nearby walls. The woofer unit is a standalone subwoofer. It uses two high-performance, high-output 10-inch drivers powered by a high-efficiency, 1000-watt switching mode amplifier. The amplifier's circuitry includes the aspects of SmartSubô technology that correct response problems caused by nearby walls, and eliminates compression distortion normally caused by high power to the drivers. The optional companion SC1 Controller can be used in augment mode to extend the bass range of the main speakers or in crossover mode to transfer the bass energy from the main speakers into the subwoofer for higher output levels. The Controller's SmartSub technology is said to allow for near-perfect integration with any speaker, regardless of brand, by automatically calculating the subwoofer response that provides seamless integration. The Controller unit has two-channel circuitry, so that stereo bass can be preserved when used with two or more subwoofer units. It is remote-controllable, has balanced and unbalanced low-level inputs and outputs, and can be used with up to 16 subwoofer units in very large systems. The SW1 weighs 108 pounds and has a 10-year warranty. The suggested retail price of the SW1 is $4,800. The companion SC1 controller is $2,800.For more information about THIEL Audio Products Company, visit www.thielaudio.com.
