B&W Introduces Signature 805

18-Nov-02

To mark the British firm's 35th anniversary, B&W unveiled an addition to its Signature 800 Series with the introduction of the Signature 805, which incorporates the latest refinements to the company's Nautilus series. ""The Nautilus 805 has proved to be the loudspeaker that fits the broadest range of system needs since the 800 Series' initial introduction,"" said B&W Loudspeakers Executive Vice President Chris Browder, ""It's very compact and remarkably good-looking, while delivering the full complement of bass clarity, midrange definition, and treble clarity and extension that make the 800 series a widely accepted world standard for high-end audio and home theatre systems. So, it was inevitable--and highly appropriate--that we create a Signature 805, to refine these winning attributes to the very limits of B&W's current technologies."" The Signature 805 incorporates three major categories of advancements: drivers, crossover components, and enclosure. Driver refinements begin with the tweeter, which utilizes the Nautilus tapered-tube loading to eliminate unwanted back wave radiation, as well as B&W's ""pod"" mounting. Compared with its predecessor, the Signature 805 tweeter extends response by nearly an octave to 50 kHz, by employing a stiffer, yet lighter connection between the dome and the aluminum drive system. The Signature 805 woofer utilizes B&W's woven-KevlarÆ diaphragm material, and a magnet structure 40 percent larger and more powerful than its precursor. For the Signature 805 crossover, B&W engineers made changes to a few key components from those in the Nautilus 805. The final choices were derived from extensive listening tests of dozens of candidates--which is a continuous ongoing process at the B&W Steyning Research Centre. The new, hand-picked capacitors are more compact versions of the ultra-low-loss devices used in the original Signature 800. Also used are high-power film-type, heat sink-equipped resistors. The Signature 805 features an improvement to the Matrixô enclosure's internal construction, which is a complex assembly of interlocking bracing. The Signature 805's exterior is available in a choice of hand-selected, hand-rubbed finishes in gray Tiger's Eye or red Bird's Eye veneers. The B&W Signature 805 are available at a manufacturers suggested retail price of $1,750 each. For more information, visit www.bwspeakers.com.
