Super Audio Compact Disc brings new dimension to collaborative effort with pianist Monty Alexander and guitarist Russell MaloneTelarc International, an industry leader in digital recording for twenty-five years, announces the release of Ray Brown, Monty Alexander and Russell Malone ñ the veteran bassistís final recording - on Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD).The new SACD format, created by Sony and Philips, provides unprecedented sound quality in stereo and discrete multi-channel surround. To achieve its sonic performance, SACD employs a radically new digital encoding technology called Direct Stream Digital. DSD samples the musical signal at a phenomenal 2.8 million times a second, 64 times greater than traditional CD recordings. The result is an extremely smooth digital waveform with unparalleled frequency response and dynamic range. Telarc is now recording all of its projects using the DSD process. The potential benefits of SACD do not stop with its performance. The SACD format supports several disc configurations, including a Hybrid SACD designed to be completely compatible with the millions of CD players in the market today. Hybrid SACDs actually contain two complete layers of music information. One is the conventional CD layer, which can play on any standard CD player. The other, high-density layer contains both the original DSD two-channel recording as well as a DSD six-channel recording that can be played in the new generation of stereo and surround SACD players. Each of the six channels can be recorded separately with full 100 kHz frequency response and 120dB dynamic range; the two-channel section achieves even greater frequency response and dynamic range across the audio band. Both the six-channel and the two-channel sound images have unparalleled resolution and transparency. What better way to honor the passing of a legend like Ray Brown - who died while touring in July 2002 - than with revolutionary SACD recording technology? A contemporary of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker with a resume that spanned a half-century, Ray Brownís final gift to the jazz world showcases the individual and collective talents of three fine jazzmen playing a mix of standards as well as their own compositions. The albumís eleven tracks merge the formidable talents of a veteran bassist, a versatile cross-cultural pianist and a young lion of jazz guitar.Jamaican born pianist Alexander, another prominent jazz figure on the Telarc label, came to the United States as a teenager in the early ë60s. His most recent Telarc release, ìMy Americaî is a tribute to the many musical and cultural icons of 20th century America who have shaped his artistic identity. Guitarist Russell Malone, meanwhile, has maintained a highly successful dual career as a solo artist on Columbia and Verve and as a valuable session player for a host of high-profile artists, including Wynton Marsalis, Diana Krall and Harry Connick, Jr. Malone appeared on three prior Ray Brown albums - ìSome of My Best Friends AreÖSingersî in 1998, ìChristmas Songs with the Ray Brown Trioî in 1999 and ìSome of My Best Friends AreÖGuitaristsî in 2002.Telarc currently has twenty titles in various genres - classical, jazz, contemporary jazz and blues - available in multi-channel (Hybrid) SACD.
