CEA Congratulates 2002 Academy Of Digital Television Pioneers Award Recipients

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) congratulated recipients of the 2002 Academy of Digital Television Pioneers (DTV Academy) Awards that were presented Monday during CEA's eighth annual HDTV Summit. The annual DTV Awards are independently voted on and bestowed by the DTV Academy for excellence in all aspects of digital content development and delivery, analog-to-digital transition leadership, and the manufacture of high-definition television products. More than half the nearly 200 DTV Academy members are individuals outside the consumer electronics industry. The 2002 Academy of Digital Television Pioneers Awards, presented during a special luncheon honoring the DTV Academy hosted by NBC4 (Washington, D.C.) Technology Reporter I.J. Hudson, recognized achievements made throughout 2002 in twelve categories. A new addition to the DTV Academy awards this year was the People's Choice Award for the best HDTV program, the first and only DTV Academy award voted on by the public. The 2002 DTV Award recipients were: - Best DTV Broadcast Network - CBS - Best Local DTV Broadcaster - WETA, PBS affiliate in Washington, D.C. - Best DTV Cable System - Time Warner - Best DTV Satellite Provider - DirecTV - Best DTV Satellite Programmer - HDNet - Best DTV Sporting Event - NBC 2002 Winter Olympics - Best Original DTV Material - NBC 2002 Winter Olympics - DTV Industry Leadership Award - Gary Shapiro, CEA - DTV Government Leadership Award - Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell - DTV Retailer Leadership Award - Best Buy, Circuit City, Tweeter (three-way tie) - DTV Press Leadership Award - HDTV Magazine - The People's Choice Award - ""The Sopranos"" (HBO) ""Receiving a DTV Award--even a nomination--is a true achievement,"" said Jeff Joseph, CEA Vice President of Communications and Strategic Relationships. ""The members of the DTV Academy are individuals from all relevant industries who have been committed to the analog to digital television transition for more than a decade. The awards allow them to recognize the other companies and individuals that are making contributions to the furtherance of high-definition television. The Academy of Digital Television Pioneers is a select group of nearly 200 individuals who have played a significant role in the decade-long effort to make digital television a reality for consumers. The DTV Academy includes individuals from the broadcasting, program development, consumer electronics industries, as well as present and former government officials and members of the media.
