At its annual Dealer Line Show, Toshiba America Consumer Products, Inc. unveiled its lineup of new DVD products. Among the highlights, Toshiba has introduced the industry's first ergonomically and fashionably designed portable DVD player (SD-P1200), a new DVD-Audio model (SD-4900), a combination DVD/DVR product with TiVoÆ Basic Service included (SD- H400), and a Super MultiDrive DVD recorder (D-R1).""From our mainline DVD players with cutting edge features, to portables with lightweight and stylish designs, to a multi-compatible, easy-to-use DVD recorder, Toshiba's DVD line features smart, functional products that meet consumers needs,"" said Jodi Sally, Director of Marketing, Toshiba Digital A/V Group. ""In 2003 we have enhanced and expanded our portable lineup and combination products, while adding even more features to our mainline products.""Toshiba's new portable DVD line includes the new SD-P2500 (MSRP $799.99) model, a player with a 1024 x 600 resolution, 8.9-inch widescreen LCD, progressive scan output, and 2-channel DVD-Audio compatibility. The SD-P2500 also features a SD/SM memory card slot for JPEG viewing. Toshiba also introduced this year the SD-P1200 ($599.99) model, the first portable player with a ""sure-grip"" design in a creative color. The faux rubberized cabinet design minimizes the unit from slipping from the user's hands or smooth surfaces.On the DVD recording technology front, Toshiba offers the new D-R1 ($599.99) recorder with Super MultiDrive capabilities. The new model allows compatibility for recording and playback of DVD-RAM and DVD-R/-RW formats. In addition, Toshiba's Time Slip function offers the ability to simultaneously record and playback, enabling consumers to pause live television as well as begin viewing a program recording that is already in progress. The new recorder is equipped with convenience features such as IEEE 1394 DV digital interface for transferring and editing home video to DVD.Toshiba's line also features the new SD-H400 combination DVD/DVR product. The product, set to ship in August, delivers on the promise of the licensing agreement made between Toshiba and TiVo. This model will be the first combination of progressive scan DVD and TiVo technology available at retail.The SD-H400 will include DVR features from TiVo called the TiVo Basic Service. This basic functionality will be included with the product and will be capable of upgrading to the full TiVo service and the TiVo Home Media Option.Toshiba's 2003 lineup also includes a new DVD-Audio model, the SD-4900 (available June; $149.99), featuring Super ColorStream PROÆ progressive scan output, which allows for 8:8:8 oversampling of interlaced color signals. The SD-4900 features Video Black Level Expansion circuitry. This capability allows viewers to set the reference black threshold cutoff to either Normal (7.5 IRE) or Enhanced (0 IRE).The new SD-4900 is also equipped with leading-edge 192 kHz/24-bit audio DACs. Additional consumer-friendly features include Digital Photo Viewer and Digital Video Noise Reduction circuitry.Rounding out Toshiba's mainline DVD players is the SD-3900 ($149.99) with progressive scan output and a sleek, streamlined silver chassis. Finally, the SD-2900 ($129.99) offers a new slim cosmetic design and comes equipped with component video outputs. All models offer WMA/MP3 compatibility, Digital Photo Viewer, and Digital Picture Zoom. Complementing the full-featured SD-V290 ($229.99) DVD/VCR combination unit, Toshiba's new SD-V390 ($249.99) features ColorStream ProÆ progressive scan output. Both models integrate a four-head hi-fi VCR with a full-featured DVD player. Both models permit DVD playback while recording a TV broadcast on VHS.Select models include features such as Enhanced Picture Mode, which allows the user to select a viewing mode based on the type of DVD being viewed, and an Enhanced Audio Mode which includes a Dialogue Expander and virtual surround sound.
