LG Electronics Designs Genesis Microchip's Faroudja Video Technology Into LCD Televisions

4-Jun-03

Genesis Microchip Inc. (NASDAQ: GNSS), parent company of Faroudja, announced that LG Electronics selected Genesis Microchip's FLI2310 digital video format converter and Jag-ASM display processor for its RU15LA60 and RU20LA60 LCD televisions now available in Europe, under the LG brand, and in North America, under the Zenith brand. The products will be available worldwide beginning in August. ""Our optimism about LCD TVs continues unabated, based on numerous factors, including fab expansion (particularly to 5th, 6th, and 7th generations where larger-size panels will be optimized), lower prices, added competition, and the emergence of HDTV. To provide a better indication of our optimism, we expect LCD TVs to experience triple-digit growth through 2004 to volumes over 32.4 million LCD TVs in 2007,"" said Barry Young, DisplaySearch Vice President and CFO. The FLI2310 is a single-chip digital video processor that converts standard interlaced and high-definition video signals into formats compatible with the fixed-pixel formats of flat-panel displays. Additionally, the FLI2310 features video enhancement technologies, aspect ratio conversion, and Faroudja's proprietary DCDiô algorithms that eliminate the jagged edges seen on moving angled lines in video. ""We selected Genesis Microchip as a strategic supplier because of their ability to consistently deliver the leading-edge video and scaling technologies required for our products,"" said Mr. S.G. Choi, Chief Research Engineer at DND (TV) Division Digital Display Multimedia Company, LG Electronics. ""Featuring EmmyÆ Award-winning Faroudja video processing with DCDi, these new LCD TVs produce the world-class picture quality that consumers have come to expect in LG and Zenith products."" ""We are very pleased that LG Electronics, recently named the most influential brand in Asia Pacific, selected Genesis to be its supplier of video processing solutions,"" said Anders Frisk, Executive Vice President and COO of Genesis Microchip. ""With our video processing technology, we enable LG to produce clear, cinema-quality images that are visibly superior on their high-end LCD TV product lines."" Other advanced performance capabilities of the FLI2310 include: - Film mode technology for proper handling of 3:2 and 2:2 pulldown, as well as bad edit detection/correction - Motion-adaptive algorithms that select optimal filtering on a per-pixel basis to produce maximum resolution and suppress motion artifacts - Nonlinear enhancement algorithms to enhance the small details and large edges of an image to create a clear picture without introducing artifacts - Flexible horizontal and vertical scalers to perform aspect ratio conversion, and to upconvert an image to resolutions up to 1080p or SXGA - Input resolutions of 480i (NTSC), 576i (PAL/SECAM), 480p, 720p, 1080i, and VGA to SXGA - Output resolutions of 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and VGA to SXGA The Jag-ASM is a highly integrated display processor with advanced analog and digital signal processing. It enables processing of text and graphics from a PC input and simultaneous viewing of two programs. Available functions include the display of two TV and/or video sources, either in side-by-side two-picture mode, or in second-screen picture-in-picture mode with flexible positioning and size. The Jag-ASM integrates a complete analog front-end for VGA analog interfacing and provides high design scalability. It accepts input images from multiple sources and displays them on any fixed-pixel display at up to SXGA resolution at 75 Hz. For more information about LG Electronics Inc., visit www.lge.com.
