MartinLoganÆ has announced the introduction of the Grottoô--a reference, powered, servo control subwoofer system. Building upon MartinLogan's Descent and Depth subwoofers, the Grotto uses a proprietary low-mass, high-excursion, high-resolution driver, advanced servo monitoring and control, a precision crossover, and a 25 Hz level control. The Grotto subwoofer features a proprietary MartinLogan 10-inch high-resolution driver, identical to those used in the Descent subwoofer. The driver features a very low-mass aluminum cone and substantial field strength generated by the magnet motor structure. The Grotto also features advanced servo monitoring and control system, combined with state-of-the-art driver and cabinet technologies. MartinLogan's control system is said to yield a three- to ten-fold distortion reduction. The Grotto can be easily tuned for any installation. MartinLogan designed the Grotto with a input/output architecture that integrates in both stereo and multichannel systems. Additionally, the RCA output allows multiple Grottos to operate in a serial configuration.Care has been focused on the group delay (phase) characteristics for each of the Grotto's six crossover settings (ranging from 30 to 80 Hz).The 25 Hz level control allows for correction of bass problems common to most rooms. It also permits increased deep bass if a subsonic sense of energy is desired at the lowest frequencies. The Grotto is now shipping at a retail price of $995 each. For more information, visit www.martinlogan.com.
