Zenith Applauds FCC Action On Digital Cable-Ready HDTV Standard

18-Sep-03

Calling it ""another major step in the transition to digital television"" (DTV), Zenith Electronics Corporation applauded the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations regarding ""plug-and-play"" digital cable-ready high-definition television (HDTV). ""With this pro-consumer action, the FCC is further accelerating the DTV transition by giving consumers the long-awaited capability to receive HDTV programming via cable without a set-top box,"" said Richard M. Lewis, Zenith Senior Vice President. ""In addition to providing for plug-and-play cable reception, the new regulations address the importance of free over-the-air HDTV by also requiring broadcast DTV tuners in sets labeled as 'digital cable-ready,'"" he said. Lewis, who worked with the team of DTV manufacturers that negotiated the plug-and-play agreement with cable multiple system operators, said Zenith's parent company, LG Electronics is preparing to introduce digital cable-ready HDTVs in the first half of 2004.
