The new 50-inch RCA Scenium HDTV set from Thomson (Euronext Paris: 18453, NYSE: TMS) incorporates DLPô (Digital Light Processingô) technology from Texas Instruments. A 61-inch model is to be become available this month. The new RCA Scenium DLP HDTV sets, part of a new line of RCA and RCA Scenium brand of integrated HDTV sets and monitors, feature integrated ATSC tuners with QAM cable demodulation capability, a built-in web browser, and multiple copy protection interfaces. The 50-inch (diagonal) HDLP50W151, measures 16 inches deep and weighs less than 100 pounds. Model HDLP61W151, a 61-inch diagonal display, also features a lightweight cabinet with a depth of 19 inches. ""Consumer and retailer reaction to the RCA Scenium DLP models validates our strategy that outstanding picture quality is a driving force behind HDTV,"" stated David Badger, Vice President, TV Product Planning, Worldwide. ""Combining Thomson's digital signal processing, TI's chip and the light engine, these two televisions deliver optimum picture performance and set the standard in the fast-growing microdisplay category,"" Badger stated. ""Not only do they deliver an outstanding picture, but they include plenty of extras. These are the only DLP HDTV sets on the market to include an integrated digital tuner capable of receiving both terrestrial HDTV broadcasts (VSB modulation) and in-the-clear local digital cable channels (QAM modulation), along with an Ethernet connection for Internet access. With their sleek, compact designs, the DLP sets take up less space than other projection televisions, providing a big-screen experience without dominating a room. Most importantly the Hi-Pix picture system really makes the product 'picture perfect,'"" he added. The sets incorporate a state-of-the-art microdisplay light engine designed to Thomson specifications, and Texas Instruments' second-generation Mustang/HD2 chipset, as well as the Thomson Hi-Pix video processing system. The new models include a built-in ATSC high-definition tuner with QAM cable demodulation capability. The Hi-Pix picture system combines two proprietary signal processing technologies--TruScan Digital Reality, a proprietary signal processing algorithm, and special DLP bit sequences which intelligently recognize incoming signals and convert them for optimum rendering on the DLP engine. The two DLP sets include a 30-watt, four-speaker package including two passive radiators. The sets offer SRSÆ TruSurround XTô and two outputs for connecting external speakers. An optical DolbyÆ Digital audio output is provided, and the TV's internal speakers can be used for the center channel. Additionally, the new RCA Scenium HDTV sets with DLP technology offer the following: - NetConnect Ethernet with Microsoft Windows Web browser to surf the Internet and watch TV simultaneously with picture-on-picture. New to the system is a photo share program that allows users to view photos on the screen directly from their PCs. - User-friendly menu system - Picture Preset Solution that provides one-touch picture adjustment. Options include Vibrant, Natural, Cinematic, and Personal. - Two two-way IEEE 1394 inputs with DTV Link and 5C - DVI input with HDCP Like the rest of the RCA Scenium HDTV lineup, the HDLP50W151 and the HDLP61W151 were designed by Thomson's global design center. The high-gloss black borderless screen creates the illusion of a floating picture and visually brightens the picture, much like the movie screen in a dark theatre. In addition, the televisions offer a brushed, anodized aluminum finish control panel. An optional stand is available to accompany the HDTV sets. Model HDLP50W151 has a suggested retail price of $3,999 is now available. Model HDLP61W151 has a suggested retail price of $4,499 and will be available in October.
