19-Feb-04

Hi-Res Musicís Soular Energy (Catalog No. HRM 2011), featuring the late, great jazz legend Ray Brown and his trio -- Gene Harris, piano, and Gerryck King, drums, with special guests Red Holloway, tenor sax, and Emily Remler, guitar -- was awarded top honors for Best Hi-Res Stereo-Only Program at the recently held Second Annual Surround Music Awards. Soular Energy beat out two other acclaimed Hi-Res Music releases, L.A. Fourís Just Friends (HRM 2014) and Herb Ellis and Joe Passís Seven Come Eleven (HRM 2005), as well as the SA-CD re-master of John Coltraneís A Love Supreme and Rosemary Clooneyís With Love, to take home the award. In a gala event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on December 11, the Second Annual Surround Music Award winners were announced. The evening, hosted by Al Schmitt and Ed Cherney and opened by BT, featured special awards presented to NARAS and Cossette Productions for the 45th Annual Grammy Awards telecast, which was done in 5.1; Led Zeppelin; Frank Zappa; and United Entertainment Media senior VP Martin Porter. Dweezil Zappa accepted the Surround Pioneer Award on behalf of his late father, and performed several songs in his honor. The Grammys were presented the Broadcast Landmark Award, and Led Zeppelin was named Surround Artist of the Year for their high-profile, self-titled DVD release. Martin Porter received the Surround Trailblazer Award for his extensive work in promoting the format, including the creation of Surround Professional magazine, the Surround 2003 Conference, and the Surround Music Awards.
