Nearly 15 years after its initial release on VHS, Joni Mitchellís critically acclaimed Refuge Of The Roads concert film will finally be available in DVD format and enhanced by Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. In stores August 24th, her legendary 1983 show is highlighted by her version of ìWoodstockî (which became a hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young), ìFor Freeî and ìRaised On Robbery,î as well as clips from intimate home movies shot during the tour. The vibrant performances found in Refuge Of The Roads makes it the perfect companion piece to Mitchellís demure Shadows And Light DVD, released by Shout! Factory in June 2003. Mitchellís love affair with jazz/rock was in full swing that year, and she invited some of the genreís greatest session musicians to join her on tour, including keyboardist Russell Ferrante (Yellowjackets), guitarist Michael Landau, bassist (and husband) Larry Klein, and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta. The ensemble seamlessly wove elements of jazz, pop, rock and folk together, while Mitchellís incomparable lyrics gracefully floated above it all. Mitchellís concert is a captivating mix of some of her greatest hits as well material from her most recent album at the time, the pop-driven 1982 Wild Things Run Fast. The collection reflects the bold creativity that has made her one of pop musicís most influential artists, and includes her reworking of ìSweet Bird of Youth,î the lighthearted bebop of ìGod Must Be A Boogie Man,î and Leiber & Stollerís ì(Youíre So Square) Baby I Donít Care.î The 13-song performance film, which was directed and co-edited by the singer-songwriter, also features the title cut ìRefuge Of The Roads,î which first appeared on Mitchellís Hejira (1976).
