Carl Reiner To Receive First-Ever TV DVD Lifetime Achievement Award

Carl Reiner, a regular on such pioneering TV shows as ""Your Show of Shows"" and the creator of influential sitcom ""The Dick Van Dyke Show,"" will be honored with the first-ever TV DVD Lifetime Achievement Award. The award will be presented during the second annual TV DVD Conference, produced by Video Store Magazine in cooperation with The Hollywood Reporter and DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group. The conference takes place Oct. 19 at the Century Plaza Hotel & Spa in Century City, Calif. Reiner, 82, has certainly left his mark on Hollywood, appearing in such landmark comedies as ""It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World"" and ""The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming."" He is also known for the string of top-grossing Steve Martin movies he directed and co-wrote, including ""The Jerk,"" ""The Man With Two Brains"" and ""Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid."" But the man who critic Leonard Maltin once called ""a veritable Renaissance man of comedy"" also played a key role in shaping television comedy and defining the situation comedy. He broke into the business as a writer and regular performer on Sid Caesar's ""Your Show of Shows,"" which premiered in 1950, and went on to create ""The Dick Van Dyke Show,"" the influential program that along with ""I Love Lucy"" set the standard for television situation comedies. He won five Emmy Awards for the show, which he often wrote and also appeared in as variety show host Alan Brady. ""The Dick Van Dyke Show"" was recently released on DVD by Image Entertainment in a series of five ""complete season"" boxed sets, produced by Paul Brownstein. Today, Reiner -- father of director Rob Reiner, and husband to singer Estelle Reiner -- remains as active as ever. He reprises his role of Saul Bloom in ""Ocean's Twelve,"" a sequel to the box office hit ""Ocean's Eleven,"" sharing the spotlight with an all-star cast that includes George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and Matt Damon. Reiner will receive his award during the noon luncheon. ""When it comes to the golden age of television, Carl Reiner's name immediately pops up as one of the greatest living legends,"" said Don Rosenberg, Publisher of Video Store Magazine and event chair for the second annual TV DVD Conference. The second annual TV DVD Conference and first-ever TV DVD Awards is expected to draw more than 300 studio and television executives. The conference will feature five panel discussions on such hot-button topics as music rights, release strategies and DVD production tricks; a product presentation luncheon; three exclusive market research presentations; an interactive workshop on special features; and an evening cocktail reception with entertainment by Tony Orlando and his band. Orlando, whose hit 1970s variety show is coming to DVD early next year, courtesy of R2 Entertainment, also will serve as master of ceremonies for the inaugural TV DVD Awards, in which the top TV DVD releases of the past year will be honored in 12 categories, including decade-by-decade ""best series"" awards.
