New Patent Granted For Wide Dynamic Range Displays; Describes Further Improvements In LCD And Projection Contrast And Color

23-Nov-04

A second generation of technology for improving the dynamic range and contrast of both LCD and projection displays is described in a new patent issued to Fergason Patent Properties (FPP) on October 2, 2004. The inventions and art included in US Patent 6,816,141 offer many additional features in addition to the base FPP technology that has been adopted in both LCD televisions and monitors and home video projectors. ""We feel that the new patent offers our licensees another level of performance from System Synchronized Brightness Control (SSBC), our name for the technology,"" says Dr. James Fergason, the Inventor and Chairman of FPP. ""The new patent provides more details on the synchronous modulation of illumination color in addition to adaptive brightness and system parameters."" FPP has previously announced that Matsushita Electric Industries and LG.Philips LCD had licensed the SSBC technology. Panasonic LCD TVs and home projectors are widely available with the SSBC feature, called AI by Panasonic. LG.Philips LCD is currently adding the feature to its line of AMLCD TV modules. ""There is now wide acceptance among LCD and projection technologists that SSBC can dramatically improve video performance"", reports Chuck McLaughlin, VP Licensing for FPP. ""Various developers refer to the frame by frame synchronization of backlights, system parameters, and color as the adaptive or dynamic or synchronized control of dynamic range, or brightness, or contrast. We see most these efforts as related and sharing many of the basic principals described by Dr. Fergason. While the new patent describes a range of improvements to the features included in the FPP gateway US Patent 5,717,422, a significant range of additional technology is disclosed regarding the synchronous control of the color of the illuminating source. Specifically, the adaptive control of RGB LED backlights is described. For more information, visit http://www.fergasonpatents.com
