Gefen Sends High Definition Video Over CAT-5 Cable

11-Mar-05

Gefen demonstrates the functionality behind its HDTV CAT5 Extenders at NSCA, which transmit high definition video and digital audio using CAT-5 cable. Previously, the industry-standard cable was deemed insufficient to carry high definition video, but new chip technologies combined with Gefen engineering has enabled the cables to be effective up to 150 feet or even to 200 feet using CAT-5 cables. ìUsing CAT-5 cables to extend high definition video can significantly cut the cost of long run cabling in installations,î said Hagai Gefen, President. ìDistances up to 150 feet can easily be reached, making it ideal for home theater and small scale installations.î Because CAT-5 cables have been used extensively throughout the audio/video industry for connecting and extending other components, the HDTV CAT5 Extender offers an uncomplicated method for upgrading to extend DVI and HDMI signals. This is especially significant because the CAT-5 cables often run in conduit. Gefenís HDTV CAT5 Extender supports high definition resolutions up to 1080p. It is HDCP (high bandwidth digital content protection) and HDMI compliant, an important functionality that enables the unit to pass through protected content without degradation. Two models are available that support different displays and video sources. One is equipped with DVI (digital video interface) to connect to the source and display, the other with HDMI. DVI transmits digital video only while HDMI bundles digital video and audio in the same cable and connector. The HDTV CAT5 Extender operates through compact sender and receiver units-both powered by a 5v external power supply (included). The sender is connected to the source and the receiver to the display. Both units are connected by a CAT-5 cable, available in lengths up to 150 feet. Gefenís HDTV CAT5 Extender will be selling for $500. For more information, visit http://www.gefen.com
