JVC Announces 4.1-Channel Sound Bar Home Theater Systems

Two systems debut– both with wireless subwoofer, one with Blu-ray player.

By Gary Reber

JVC offers a simple solution to top-quality home theater sound with the introduction of two new home theater systems.  The new TH-BA1 and TH-SB100 are both 4.1-channel systems that feature a low-profile front surround sound bar and wireless subwoofer.  Both systems combine sleek design and simple setup with performance that delivers clear dialog and convincing surround sound.

The sound bar is configured to fit neatly under a TV or can be wall-mounted.  Its front surround technology eliminates the need for rear speakers and the placement problems, clutter and extra wiring that comes with them.  A single cable connects the sound bar to a source (DVD or Blu-ray player) or TV via each systems’ two digital optical inputs and one analog input.  And to further simplify setup, the included subwoofer is wireless.  The TH-BA1 includes two components – the sound bar and wireless subwoofer, while the TH-SB100 adds a separate Blu-ray player to the package.

The black, low-profile sound bar includes four speakers, an amplifier and a sound processor. It also features built-in Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II and DTS decoding.  Total system power is 220W, with each speaker within the sound bar amplified and housed in a separate internal structure to prevent interference.  The virtual surround sound is based on JVC’s own front surround technology.  The two outboard speakers deliver the left and right channel information, while the middle two speakers each deliver center channel information plus the surround/left and surround/right channels.  The result is clear dialog and an immersive soundfield.

The subwoofer features a 6-5/6-inch (8cm) driver and is powered by its own built-in 100-watt digital amplifier.  2.4GHz digital wireless technology connects the subwoofer to the sound bar, and eliminates the need for a cable connection, providing simple setup and placement flexibility.

Power on/off, volume adjustment and source/surround mode selection can be operated using the provided remote control.

To the sound bar and subwoofer of the TH-BA1, the TH-SB100 adds a freestanding JVC Blu-ray player.  In addition to Blu-ray discs, the player offer playback of the AVCHD format, the widely used HD camcorder format. Other features include BD Live compatibility when used with USB memory.  Player connections include HDMI ver.1.3 with Deep Color and x.v.Color, USB Host, LAN for BD Live, component and composite video outputs, and analog, optical and coaxial audio outputs.  In addition to AVCHD, other playable formats are JPEG, MP3, WMA, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS and DTS HD.

The TH-BA1 and TH-SB100 will be available in September for $399.99 and $699.99, respectively.
