High-Definition Viewing Choices

By Gary Reber

A Letter To The Editor I recently received underscored a reader’s, and I suspect a majority of readers, sentiment that he was not going to invest in Blu-ray releases, regardless of picture and sound quality, if the movie itself was not worth it.

I can certainly agree with his position.

With respect to a movie—or for that matter, a television program delivered via broadcast, cable, or satellite—if the movie or program is worth viewing and is available in both Blu-ray Disc™ or HDTV and the old standard-definition format, wouldn’t you want to watch the Blu-ray Disc or HDTV version every time, when you had a choice? I certainly would.

The Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing collaborates this sentiment in recent studies. The Association reports that 41 percent of HDTV owners subscribe to an HDTV programming service, and 45 percent said they make a point of watching a high-definition program “most of the time” when they do watch TV. And more than 20 percent of HDTV owners make a point of watching a high-definition program “every time” they watch any TV.

Yet, sadly, there are still TV executives and content producers who believe that it doesn’t matter if the program is in high-definition as long as it’s a quality program.

I personally side with those viewers who, when given the choice, will always opt for the high-definition version. After all, can you think of any movie or program that you wouldn’t want to view in high-definition?
