David Geffen Parting Ways With DreamWorks After 14 Years

By Stacey Pendry

In a move that left longtime colleague Steven Spielberg sputtering, DreamWorks founding member David Geffen announced that he will not be making the move from Paramount Pictures to Universal Studios, in a deal he himself brokered on behalf of DreamWorks.

Spielberg said he really didn't know why his friend and mentor had decided to part ways with DreamWorks, 14 years after he first helped bring the studio to fruition. "I cannot imagine not having David in my professional life," and went on to indicate that he intended to keep close ties with Geffen on a personal, if not professional, level.

In a masterful deal that had DreamWorks cutting ties with Paramount, while aligning themselves with Universal to distribute a half-dozen films each year, Geffen set up a complete new company between Spielberg and DreamWorks principal Stacey Snider. Geffen has decided, for the time being, to stay on the board of DreamWorks Animation, a separate company from DreamWorks, which has remained under Paramount's distribution umbrella.

DreamWorks Founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, who still sits on the board with Geffen at DreamWorks Animation, declined
to comment on whether or not Geffen intended to step down from his roll at the animation studio. But, with a fortune that Forbes magazine has estimated at $6.5 billion, 65-year-old Geffen may just take the money and retire from the Hollywood movie mill.
