SpectraCal Offers First Digital Video Pattern Generator

By Gary Reber

SpectraCal, LLC has released the CalMAN DPG-1000, the first all digital video pattern generator.

“At a fraction of the cost of the competition, the DPG-1000 is an amazing value” says industry analyst Kris Deering.

"We’ve been looking for the right pattern generator to offer CalMAN users for a long time,” explains SpectraCal CEO Derek Smith. “When we couldn’t find what we were looking for, we finally had to invent one ourselves."

SpectraCal is the creator of CalMAN Professional, the leading home theater calibration software. Professional calibrators who purchase CalMAN from SpectraCal find it convenient to acquire their calibration equipment at the same time.  Smith explains that SpectraCal wanted to provide a complete kit, and the video pattern generator was the missing piece.

Previously, video pattern generators were designed by hard-wiring patterns into analog circuitry. The DPG-1000 works by playing digital patterns on a digital media player.

“Using off-the-shelf commodity components meant that we were able to drive the price way down,” says Smith. Competing video pattern generators sell for as much as $4000.  The DPG-1000 is available from SpectraCal for $699.

The DPG-1000 is the first pattern generator to offer complete support of the digital video interface HDMI.  Previous pattern generators used a DVI transmitter which could only output RGB signals. The DPG-1000 uses an HDMI transmitter which, in addition to RGB, can output YCbC4 422.444, the interface most displays today use as the native transport.

Containing over a thousand pattern combinations, the DPG-1000 supports 480p60, 576p50, 720p50/60 and 1080i60/p60/p24. It will output video (16-235) or PC (0-255) levels.

The DPG is controlled wirelessly via infrared, using an infrared transceiver that plugs into a USB port. CalMAN Enthusiast and Professional licenses automate use of the new pattern generator, so a calibrator can accomplish a whole series of measurements in a single operation.
