Dolby Digital Surround EX

Dear Gary: Thanks for the Number One reference DVD magazine in the world. I was wondering if when you review EX titles if you can add info about if it carries a EX flag, so EX processors will automatically switch!

Staff Writer And Research Editor Michael Coate comments:

The information you are seeking has always been included in the reviews. It might not be mentioned specifically in the sound review text about whether the disc has EX flags, but rather, the information is listed in the “DVD Soundtrack” and “Theatrical Soundtrack” fields. The theatrical field would mention if a film was mixed with Dolby Digital Surround EX-encoding. The DVD Soundtrack field would say “Yes” if the disc is encoded as EX. Because movies that were not shown theatrically in EX are starting to show up in EX on DVD (such as T2 and Seven), means that the DVD Soundtrack field is probably the thing you will most likely want to look up, more so than the theatrical field. This explanation applies to our Web reviews. For the print edition, check the credits box contained in the overall review box given for the movie.
