Dear Gary:First of all let me congratulate you on your magazine. I can’t get enough of it all the way down here in Australia. My first question concerns progressive scanning. Does the television and DVD player both have to be progressive-capable or just the one? Only now have progressive scan TVs become available in Australia, and DVD players a little bit longer. Thanks to your magazine reviews I purchased Denon’s Australian version of the AVR 5800, the AVC1SE, so I could have the DTS 6.1 discrete. My next question is, if possible, when can we see more of the 6.1 discrete discs, and what might they be?Thank you very much for your time and keep up the good work.

Video Technical Editor Greg Rogers Comments:
Some TVs, particularly those capable of displaying HDTV, have built-in line doublers that will generate progressive-scan video from any interlaced-video source, including their own tuners. Naturally, they will then display the progressive-video they generate. Some direct-view and rear projection TVs, as well as most CRT front projectors, are capable of displaying progressive-scan video, but don’t have built-in line doublers or scalers. To display progressive-scan video on these displays you must have a source that produces progressive video. The source could be a progressive-scan DVD player, or an external line doubler used with any interlaced-video product. I’m not familiar with the specific products available in Australia, so you should consult with a local home theatre specialty retailer on progressive-scan products and their compatibility.Movie Sound Editor Perry Sun Comments: To date there have been four DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 DVD releases in Region 1, including Chicken Run, Gladiator, The Haunting, and Se7en Platinum Edition. More titles are certainly to follow, but none have yet been officially announced.
