Dear Gary:I recently purchased the new Toshiba 57H81 widescreen HDTV. I was considering the purchase of a progressive-scan DVD player but realized that my TV upconverts all 480i and 480p signals to 540p. Will I be wasting my money on a progressive-scan DVD player if I won’t notice a picture quality improvement over my interlaced player? Thanks for your opinion, and keep up the good work!

I believe the Toshiba 57H81 includes 3:2 pull-down detection and inverse-telecine deinterlacing, which means you probably won’t see a dramatic difference with most progressive-scan DVD players. But read my answer to the previous question for some reasons why a higher-end progressive-scan DVD player may provide visible improvements. You would need to audition specific DVD players with your TV to see if you find the benefits significant.
