Vandersteen Signature

Dear Gary: This letter is in response to Shane Buettner’s review of the Vandersteen Signature Series Reference System and in particular the 3A Signature, which appeared in Issue 54. Let me start by saying that I agree this is a superb speaker. I have had the pleasure of listening to them and agree whole heartedly with the positive review. I do believe the sound is attributed to reasons other than “time accuracy.” The theory is that by staggering the drivers the sound from each driver will arrive at the listener at the same time. This is a novel idea but in my mind the fact of the matter is that this is true for only one very precise listening distance. If the listener is too far away, the high frequencies will arrive first (as with conventional designs) and if the listener is too near, the low frequencies should arrive first. It is for this reason that I attribute the superb sound of this system to other factors such as phase accuracy, open baffle design, driver design and construction etc. I feel all of these factors were correctly addressed in Mr. Buettner’s review. Keep up the good work.
