Dear Gary:As an addendum to what I said in the D-Theater Movie Festival interview (roundtable): “I also thought that the image quality [of D-VHS] was much sharper than the DVD. And the audio quality of the D-VHS was superior as well.”Roger W. BestDear Gary:I was at your recent JVC HM-DH30000U demo and wanted to tell you that I thought it was great. I didn’t comment at the demo but thought I would do so now. I sat right behind “The Chair” and thought that there was definitely a big difference between the DVD and D-VHS D-Theater, with a slight improvement going to the D-5 master. In my opinion, I think the segments of viewing for each format need to be shorter, maybe ten minutes, because by the time the same footage came around again, it got hard to recall exactly what you saw before in picture quality. The hardest comparison was D-Theater to the D-5, since there was very little difference. I think the JVC HM-DH30000U needs to have an ATSC HD tuner integrated into the unit to make it more marketable. I don’t want to have to keep buying $500-plus items to plug together, in order to record an over-the-air program. That’s just my two cents worth. Thanks again for the invite, and I hope to be invited back.Craig WebbDear Gary:I hope you will print this letter, because I just want to let all your readers know what a great group of people you have working at the magazine. I recently attended the D-Theater Movie Festival and everyone I talked to was knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. But to be totally truthful, the real star of the day was the Holosonic Theatre with the D-VHS D-Theater tape rolling. The best word I can think of is “magnificent.” The picture was so razor-sharp that you could see a clear highlight in each bead of sweat on the actor’s foreheads, and this was when projected on a 10-foot-wide screen. Wow! And the sound system—let me put it this way—is so good it makes dripping water sound fantastic. The soundfield was so enveloping and realistic without ever seeming loud, and each detail of the most complex, dense parts of the soundtrack were all cleanly articulated. It was the home theatre fantasy come true. Thanks everyone for a great afternoon that I’ll not soon forget.Eric Johnson
Editor-In-Chief Gary Reber Comments:
It pleases me deeply that so many guests to our D-VHS D-Theater Movie Festival really appreciated the picture and sound quality that the format delivers, when the source material and mastering are at their best. Our next festivals have been scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, July 13 and 14, and August 10 and 11. If demand warrants we will consider adding additional dates.
