Progressive Scan DVD Players

Dear Gary: I am about to purchase a new DVD player. There seems to be a lot of good values on progressive scan players. My TV is approximately one year old, but I know it’s not HDTV or any other high-definition format. Can I use a progressive scan player with my older set and then be “up-to-date” when I purchase a new TV later in the year?

Video Technical Editor Greg Rogers Comments:

All progressive scan DVD players also have interlaced outputs that you can use with your current TV. Use the YPbPr output for the best video quality if your TV has YPbPr inputs. Otherwise, use the S-video output. The composite video output should be used only as a “last resort” with older TVs that don’t have the other inputs. When you get a new TV with a progressive scan input you can switch the YPbPr output of the DVD player to progressive scan.
