DVD Reviews

Dear Gary:

I use your scoring system for reviews to make purchase decisions, and I keep your scores in my inventory list. I am now subscribing, so I access the detail information to read the comments about picture and sound quality. I have noticed that many times, when there is a reissue of a disc, or a “new and improved” version, the comments detail the improvements (or lack of) but the scores are often lower when the comments indicate a significant improvement in the new edition. There are several, but if you look at Clear And Present Danger, you will see what I am talking about. Is this a case of the original score being too generous? How can you correct this so that your scoring system has some credibility?

DVD Review Senior Editor Suzanne Hodges Comments:

We believe that our rating system has credibility because our scores are given on a “current standards” basis. It’s not that the original scores were generous because those scores represented the best of the format at that time. The new scores are intended to show how the new DVD re-release measures up to current standards. We have definitely considered this topic in the past (and have received many letters), but have come to the conclusion that if we were to change the previous high scores, that would be reason to lose our credibility.
