Advance DVDs

Dear Gary:

How is it that a supposedly well-regarded magazine like Widescreen Review apparently doesn’t receive advance copies of soon-to-be-released DVDs, so that on the release date (or before) we can avail ourselves of your opinions to assist in our purchasing decisions?

DVD Review Senior Editor Suzanne Hodges Comments:

Unfortunately, some Internet companies who promote themselves to the studios as reputable reviewing agencies have ruined it for well-regarded magazines like us. Piracy has left many studios with a zero-tolerance policy and will NOT send out advance DVDs to anyone. We have an excellent rapport with some studios and are working on strengthening relationships with others. In addition, some of our long-term studio contacts have been replaced by interns who have no apparent appreciation for who we are or how long we have been in the business, and we have lost preferential treatment with some of these companies. Often times, we do receive advance DVDs, but are under obligation to observe strict embargoes, meaning we are not allowed to post reviews on our Web site prior to the DVDs’ street date. We do our best...and I am constantly working on improving the situation.
