Marantz VP-11S1 Projector Review

Dear Gary:

In Widescreen Review, Issue 112, Greg Rogers added an area in his review of the Marantz projector titled “The Blue-ray Disc Debut.” He explained how he “absolved” the VP-11S1 of the “soft” viewing results on multiple discs by trying D-VHS D-Theater™ versions. I’m just wondering if he used a different input and cabling with the D-Theater versions. I’m “assuming” he used component with the D-Theater while using HDMI with the BD discs. If so, maybe that’s where the problem lies, as I have experienced this myself with a different projector. Very soft appearances with digital cables and sharp pics with component. Just a long shot!

Video Technical Editor Greg Rogers Comments:

I used HDMI digital video connections (with the same cable) to view Blu-ray Discs and D-Theater movies. In the latter case, I used a JVC® HM-DH5U D-Theater VCR. I also verified the projector’s high-frequency response, sharpness, and lack of edge artifacts using digital video signals from an AccuPel HDG-3000 video calibration generator. In future projector reviews, I will also be using an HD DVD player as a movie source.

An HDMI connection should not be “soft” compared to an analog component video connection in properly functioning, properly calibrated, video components. However, a video source with a poor analog component video output may produce overshoot and ringing on signal edges, which may be perceived as “sharper” at the expense of edge-outlining artifacts and exacerbated noise or film grain. Poor analog signal processing/digitizing in a projector may produce similar effects.
