Are HDMI Versions 1.1 And 1.2 Compatible With Version 1.3?

Dear Gary:

I read with great interest the August article in Issue 111 on “The Future Of HDMI.” My question, however, was not answered. I have ordered new equipment, including a Denon 4806CI receiver and a Sony VPL-VW100 projector. Both, of course, include HDMI connections, but neither mentions the version number. If these (newly introduced) pieces of equipment are versions 1.1 or 1.2, does that mean that now that 1.3 is coming out they are outdated before I even get them? Or would they just not include the capabilities offered by 1.3?

Editor-In-Chief and Publisher Gary Reber Comments:

They would not include the new capabilities offered by 1.3, but version 1.3 is backwards compatible with all previous HDMI versions, so they will interface with any new equipment you purchase with HDMI version 1.3.
