DVD Picture Scores

Dear Gary:
First let me say I enjoy your magazine and Web site. I follow the DVD reviews very closely. That being said, I wish there could be one high-def DVD format. I have chosen not to purchase any of the high-def DVD formats until there is one winner, which brings me to my question. Are standard DVDs that would normally get a 4.5 or higher picture score, now receiving a lower score because the high-def version might score higher? I don’t see many standard DVDs getting a score above 4. Also, it’s getting a little confusing with three formats to review in your magazine—I know it’s not Widescreen Review’s fault. I reached a certain comfort level with Suzanne Hodges doing the picture scores. Keep up the excellent work.

Managing Editor Danny Richelieu Comments:

You are not alone in wishing there could be one high-definition optical disc format. We understand that it can be confusing when reading our reviews, as to what formats we are reviewing, which is why we attempt to color code the scores (black for DVD, red for HD DVD, and blue for Blu-ray Disc) and provide the individual written reviews of each format in one place. If you can think of an easier way to do it, please send us an email, we would love the feedback.
In response to the scores, we decided to judge the high-definition formats (HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc, and D-VHS) separately from the standard-definition formats (DVD and LaserDisc) in regards to scoring. So, while there may be times when the DVD receives a higher score than the high-definition counterpart, this does not mean the DVD has a better picture or sound than the high-definition release. I attempt to judge all discs the same way as Suzanne did because all of us were comfortable with her way of scoring. Hopefully, with time, you will become just as comfortable with me.
