July/August Editorial

Dear Gary:
I must admit that your opening editorial is a bit sad to read. I know it’s true, but still a sad reflection of the “commodity” direction of the industry. At least in Singapore there is a shopping centre called The Adelphi, which has five floors of hi-fi and home theatre shops where one can still sit down and audition equipment/loudspeakers in listening rooms. However, the last time I was in the U.K. a lot of the shops of this type had disappeared. What’s left are the supermarket types with rows of televisions and the like. The sales guy usually knows very little except, “Which one would you like to buy?”...No evaluation test allowed. So yes, Widescreen Review is more and more important to be able to provide the enthusiast details about product so that when we “blind buy” we do know what the expected performance will be.
