Blu-ray Disc Reviews

Dear Gary:
I started with Issue 21 and have read every issue since. I have 3,409 DVDs, a few-hundred LaserDiscs, and about 30 CED discs. I also have 35 HD DVDs.

We know that Blu-ray is the best product right now, but you state in your editorials that you intend to stay true to our enthusiast readers who want to understand the home theatre technologies. This would be great, but you just abandoned the DVD format.

You did not do this to the LaserDisc when DVDs came out. You still reviewed LaserDiscs to the end. You have abandoned the DVD like it does not exist.

Please reconsider your decision, and reinstated the DVD to the other 70 percent of collectors that need these reviews.

Editor-In-Chief and Publisher Gary Reber Comments:

I explained our position in my readers’ letters section of the March/April issue. The same master is used and then made for DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Whatever scores we give to Blu-ray should be interpolated for the DVD. For the DVD to look or sound better than the Blu-ray Disc edition, there would have had to been a major error in the process.

We cannot support reviews for both formats. It is not feasible in terms of time. We do however, but on a limited basis, still do comparisons on our exclusive Webzine reviews of Blu-ray Disc titles. Because Blu-ray is now the state-of-the-art, we decided to exclusively review in this format. For the past two years plus, previous to our new policy, we did both DVD and Blu-ray reviews of the same title. We can now do many more titles instead, by focusing on Blu-ray only. Not only is the picture superior on Blu-ray ,but the surround sound also is lossless and up to 7.1-channel discrete. These are significant differences.

I hope you understand that we simply do not have the time necessary to do both.
