You Were Right, Gary

Dear Gary:
I believe I owe you an apology. I was one of those people who were upset at the fact that you no longer were going to review DVDs.

I don’t have a plasma, and although I have a good setup, I figured I would wait until that “one day” when I would upgrade all my equipment.

Well, even though I have a 27-inch television, I went ahead and purchased a Blu-ray Disc™ player because I figured I could still decode the “core” tracks off the lossless codecs.

I have the audio streaming out of an optical connection (Monster M-Series), and my TV is only capable of 480i.

You are right, Gary!!!!!

Even with just the “core” tracks, I could really tell the difference. The most frustrating thing for me was not having enough DTS® tracks on DVD. Currently I have noticed that more DTS tracks have become available on Blu-ray™ and it’s one of my main reasons for upgrading. The DTS “core” tracks are amazing, and I can’t believe I didn’t do this sooner. The Dolby Digital 640 kbps is very good also and much better than the 448 kbps DVD versions.

I don't see myself going back to DVD. I still have some very good DVDs, but once you see and hear Blu-ray, there is no going back. And even though I can only go up to 480i for my TV, the picture still looks very good.

You have made a wise decision to only review Blu-ray, and even though I still can’t extract the full extent of Blu-ray content, it goes to show that anyone can still benefit from Blu-ray at this time. I look forward to your extensive Blu-ray reviews in upcoming issues.

I will upgrade soon and thank you once again for your magazine and your support. I love DTS as well, and it’s my dream come true to have so many of the films I love to finally be available in DTS.

I support you all the way...

No apology necessary. I am pleased that you have discovered the vastly improved sound and picture improvement delivered by the Blu-ray Disc format. Just wait until you fully upgrade to HDTV resolution and HDMI DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD. Wow!
