Enamored With DTS And THX

Dear Gary: As you’ve so often heard, the mag is excellent. I wanted to drop you a line on my initial experimentation with DTS DVDs. The Eagles’ “Hell Freezes Over” live concert, for example, is so “you are there” in sound quality and dynamic range that I had to write. Other DTS CDs perform similarly well. My system, though excellent for film, has never sounded so good with respect to music, embarrassing almost. I have a 7.1 channel Citation amplifier/speaker system with a Meridian digital front end (565 6.0 is the brains). I’m convinced now that with an excellent source (such as DTS material), multichannel audio can excel in a THX® speaker system. Moreover, the speakers may have an advantage over conventional designs in that the limited (or controlled) dispersion characteristics of the higher frequencies allow for more control over soundtrack design. Such is Lucasfilm’s argument in the design of movie (or home THX) speakers. Do you agree or am I way too enamored with my own system?

M Profendo

Editor Gary Reber Comments:

While I agree with you on the sound quality capabilities of the DTS Digital Surround format on the THX question you are way too enamored with your own system.
